The Annenberg Challenge is the name that has come to describe the $500 million gift made by Ambassador Walter Annenberg in December, 1993, to reform America's public schools. The purpose of the Challenge is to bring about systemic, whole-school change in America's public schools, with an intended emphasis on local collaboration.

Groups of teachers, administrators, parents, business and community leaders, funders and other stakeholders are working together to develop and support clusters of restructured schools within their locality. In an effort to help the country's largest (and most troubled) urban areas, an initial round of Challenge grants was awarded to specially formed coalitions in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and the San Francisco Bay area.

Other places which have received monies are Atlanta, Boston, Chattanooga, Detroit, Houston, Salt Lake City, South Florida and West Baltimore.
