1987 - "Cultural History" by E. D. Hirsch published PDF Print E-mail

Like Lester Frank Ward, William T. Harris, and William C. Bagley, Hirsch recongized that knowledge is power and that accesss to knowledge is crucial in a democracy. The more a person knows, the more he or she is able to learn; knoledged builds on prior knowledge. Hirsch insisted that cultural history—knowledge of the basic information needed to thrive in the modern world—was the most important path to opportunity for disadvantaged children, "the only reliable way of combating the social determinism that now condems them to remain in the same  social and educational condition as their parents" (Ravitch, 2000, p. 419).
