Pres. Nixon described ESP “as a strategy for building ‘a bridge between educational research and actual practice’” (Ravitch, 1983, p. 258). Examples of ESP schools include the Franklin Pierce district in Washington based their curricula on individualization, Berkley Alternative Schools were based on ethnicity and decreasing racism. Comments: In order to secure funding, “school districts had to propose programs of comprehensive change” (Ravitch, 1983, p. 258). Comprehensive meant it had be K-12, use research, address issues such as community involvement and staff development, and be organized around a theme of change. References: Ravitch, D. (1983).
